Cadwgan Newsletter No.1

The future’s looking good for Cardigan Castle with Cadwgan’s favoured option: a multi use site incorporating public gardens, Welsh learning centre, heritage centre, café, public events and holiday accommodation being taken on board. The trust has now entered into a partnership with castle owners Ceredigion County Council and with the help of leading architect Niall Phillips is putting together a £4.8m bid for the Heritage Lottery Fund. The county council has also agreed to act as guarantor for a loan from the AHF to purchase Ty Castell – this will be undertaken by a sister trust Cardigan Castle BPT.

Here’s a quick resume of the past few months:

October 2007: Cadwgan and Cardigan Castle take a lead role in the visit of the Association of Preservation Trusts to Cardigan. The conference is judged a huge success with many compliments paid to the heritage work that is going on in Cardigan.
Cadwgan Trustees meet with the Vivat Trust to discuss potential holiday accommodation in No 43, the East Wing and the Gardener’s Cottage.

December 2007: Ceredigion Cabinet agrees to enter into partnership with Cadwgan setting the seal on months of hard work. Work now starts on appointing a project officer to oversee the bid.

January 2008: Trustees now looking at raising Cardigan Castle’s profile over the coming months. Letters have been sent to all local councils asking for their support and fundraising ideas are coming thick and fast. Cadwgan is now looking at consolidating its Friends and Volunteers as well as revamping its website.
