Cardigan Castle at the National Eisteddfod

Cardigan Castle took centre stage at the National Eisteddfod last week with a special reception hosted by local building preservation trust Cadwgan.

The event was to celebrate the submission of its £4.8m Heritage Lottery bid – a process which has taken over two years.

Cadwgan is now pulling out all the stops in its efforts to promote Cardigan Castle.

Cadwgan chair Jann Tucker and fellow trustee Dick Thomas spent a day on the Maes in Cardiff handing out promotional leaflets.

“It’s very fitting of course that we start this promotional campaign at the National Eisteddfod – the castle is, after all, where it all started,” said Mrs Tucker.

The reception was attended by Archdruid Dic Jones who talked about the importance of the castle in Welsh cultural history.

He also expressed a hope that the town’s Gorsedd stones would be relocated to inside the castle grounds.

Mr Jones also presented well-known Welsh jeweller Mari Thomas with an englyn which will be engraved on a one-off piece of silver jewellery which will be auctioned to raise funds later this year.

Cadwgan has to raise at least £50k as part of its matchfunding for the £9m project. Several events are planned throughout the next few months, including a flower festival at Green Street cottages next weekend.

Ceredigion AM Elin Jones also attended the reception.

She said: “This is a very ambitious project which will be of great benefit for Cardigan and the whole of West Wales once it is completed.”

A decision on the lottery bid should be known by early next year.
